I have been reading the book of Haggai for a couple weeks preparing for another lecture on the Minor Prophets. I love that God is revealing a different side of His character after His judgement and their captivity. But as I was reading, I saw behaviors in the Israelites that I personally struggle with that are huge obstacles in my own obedience. Sadly, they become a cycle that is hard to break. The first step is recognizing the 7 obstacles of obedience.
A young Tom Riley is given the job of taking medicine to a sick woman, but he has to endure traveling with his pesky sister while remembering the specific instructions for the journey. His obedience was prompt. When God speaks to us it is sometimes very difficult to explain the ‘how’ of it. That He has spoken we are sure, and all that we have to do is promptly to obey His voice. For three New Testament illustrations of the obedience of faith and of obedience with liveliness, read Acts 8:26-30; 9:10-17; 10:9-33. His obedience was prompt. Here is another way St. Thomas distinguishes three categories related to obedience: 1) true obedience; 2) perfect obedience; and 3) false obedience: We may distinguish a threefold obedience; one, sufficient for salvation, and consisting in obeying when one is bound to obey: secondly, perfect obedience, which obeys in all things lawful. 58: A Matter of Obedience January 21, 1989 A young Tom Riley and his sister are given the job of taking medicine to a sick woman, but Tom has trouble following his.
God in His faithfulness is trying to get their attention and trying to get them to see the err of their ways. They have come out of captivity from Babylon, and were to be about God’s business in rebuilding the temple that was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar. It has been sitting incomplete for around ten years and He asks them several times to “consider your ways”.
Let’s look at the 7 obstacles of obedience that each of us struggle with.
*Excuses
*Procrastination
*Distractions
*Busyness
*Opposition
*Comparison
*Discouragement
We will look at each obstacle, how it was manifested in the life of God’s chosen people, how it manifests itself in our lives, and how God encouraged them through it (in the next post
